Serenity

DSH - DOB June 2023

New property owners were told that Serenity was a barn cat. She was ear tipped when spayed but after her recovery the new owners thought she would be happier as a house cat and surrendered her to NHKR. Serenity has learned quickly to enjoy house life - she shys away from open doors and is relaxed and calm indoors. She is accepted by other cats and is curious about them. She will follow and sniff but she has not engaged them in play...yet. Serenity easily entertains herself looking out windows or playing nicely with her toys. She is a lower energy cat who does not dash around wildly, although she is a busy explorer and only settles when she is tired. Serenity is learning to ask people for attention and will politely jump up beside people and when invited settle into a lap. She especially loves tummy rubs and will flop down in front of walking people, hoping they will stop for "tummy time". This is a trip hazard, so her foster family picks her up, cradles her like a baby and rubs her tummy. She is not interested in people food and is tidy with her food area aside from a bit of playing in her water dish. Trimming her nails is easily done and she is beginning to enjoy some light brushing. In her new home she could be an only cat, she would not annoy an old cat or she could learn to be a playmate for a younger cat. The more attention she is given, the more affectionate she becomes. Serenity has the potential to become someone's best friend.
AsterAster
Aster

Aster

DSH - DOB April 18 2012

Aster can be shy when meeting new people but is relaxed and present with her trusted people. She prefers the company of adults in a quiet household. When around young children she hides when it is noisy or there is a lot of activity. Aster would be great company for adults who work from home or retirees, as she appreciates a consistent routine. She has a calm nature and is not super active, although she will get bursts of energy and play with her toys in the evening. Aster is affectionate with her people and will rub against their legs and vocalize to ask for cuddles. She likes to sit on the couch armrest and doze when her family settles in to watch television. If allowed, Aster likes to sleep on the bed with her person. She has no issues being picked up. She is tidy with food and litter. Nail trimming is best done in short stints. Aster likes to drink from the bathtub tap and would likely enjoy a drinking fountain in her new home. She uses her scratching post consistently and can often be found sleeping on the top of the cat tower. Aster is a lovely girl who should be an only cat in her new home.

River

DMH - DOB June 2 2022

River is an absolute delight. He loves to give two-paw hugs and snuggle up under the chin of any of his people. Lap snuggles are also high on his list of things to do in a day. He has become confident and more independent as he has learned to trust people and understand that he doesn't have to have his eyes on people all the time to know that they won't leave him. He enjoys watching squirrels and birds from the window, as well as chasing strings on a wand or playing with one of his toys. He likes to nap on his cat tower, or in his cat bed on one of his foster family members desks, or on a chair or couch nearby. He is a great work from home or study companion! River must be an only cat in his new family.

He is adjusting well to living inside again and is becoming accustomed to the daily noises of life in his foster home. He is generally happy to meet new people and often accepts them quickly.

River usually loves to be picked up for snuggles or pats and will signal when he's had enough by wiggling or jumping down. He may swat (no claws), or bite if he is ignored. While this doesn't hurt (since he has no teeth), if you ignore his 'bites' it may ultimately escalate to him using his claws. He talks to his people to tell them when he wants food, snuggles or playtime.

River has no teeth and is missing one third of his tongue, so he has particular needs when it comes to eating. It is suspected that he has food allergies so he eats a limited ingredient dry kibble purchased at a pet food store and wet food for cats with food sensitivities from the vet. This dry food's shape and size also enables him to consume his food easier. He needs a small high sided round bowl to help him scoop his dry food up into his mouth, and once he's done his best, the remaining crunchies are mixed with about a tablespoon of wet food mounded in the bowl. He has the most success at eating the last few pieces of dry food when it is arranged in small piles of 2-4 crunchies (mixed with wet food ) for him in his bowl.

Check back often as new kittens enter our program all the time.
